In my art I bring sacred attention to the things I care about most in life. I am exploring the depths of devotion, of how deeply I can care for the elements that make up my experience. My devotions are varied and subtle on the surface, but each contemplates what it means to be cherished or hurt.
Inspired by the artistic style of medieval illuminated manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells, as well as content from Carl Jung's Red Book, I've begun creating an unbound manuscript.
The work is organized into chapters, each focusing on a specific devotion. The Pets chapter, for example, focuses on our relationship with animals and our capacity to both care for and hurt them. In this chapter, I introduce the dog and the fish. There is grief distilled into each life-worn page, here I paint their journey of reflection, surrender, and freedom.
The script I use in my work is a mix of asemic writing, meaning that it has no discernible translation, and my own coded alphabet, with just enough English to provide a lead into ciphered poetry. Throughout the chapters, careful calligraphic writing tells a veiled story, ineffable in the way spiritual pursuits often are.
